Returning to classes can be an unsettling time for parents and students alike, but preparation is the best recipe for dealing with this phase. Several studies have shown that children who are prepared and ready at the beginning of the school year are more confident and tend toward a more productive initial academic performance.
With this in mind, our school community at Academia Cotopaxi would like to share our top tips to help your child adapt anew to the school routine:
–Quickly get back into routine: It’s time to return to scheduled times for going to bed, getting up, and eating. We recommend starting this process two weeks before classes begin. If rules or routines were not followed during vacation, talk to your child about the benefits of this gradual adaptation process.
–Talk with your child about the importance of learning: Tell your child that you have chosen the very best school for him or her. Assure your child that the school is a safe and positive environment in which your child is going to learn while s/he is respected and valued.
–Turn off the television: Encourage your child to play without technology, to work on jigsaw puzzles, paint or read during the morning instead of watching television. This will facilitate the learning process and help your child to adapt to the school routine.
–Ensure your child’s mental and physical health and wellbeing: Schedule medical and dental checkups before the school year begins.
–Review all information sent by the school: Start now by entering important dates in your calendar to organize your time beforehand. If you already have the list of required school supplies and materials, acquire these in advance.
–Organize spaces: Establish a designated place for your child’s backpack, lunch box, or important notices sent by the school. Explain to your child that emptying their backpack every evening is part of their responsibilities, and that goes for small children as well.
